Cardinal Shehan offers a foreign language program in Spanish in Grade Five through Grade Eight. In Grade Five Spanish is introduced as a special class on a  weekly basis.  Upon entering Sixth Grade students attend Spanish class as one of their daily core subject areas.

Our program focuses on oral proficiency, but also teaches writing, listening and reading skills. Students have the advantage of learning a second language early, as they best develop linguistic skills at a younger age.

Students focus on daily vocabulary and common phrases that involve numbers and colors, the classroom environment, family, and greetings. Students also learn about the customs and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Our program is taught interactively using music, video, and other multimedia.

The Middle School curriculum builds on vocabulary and basic phrases by introducing more complex grammar structures and advanced cultural aspects, in an effort to create global citizens. Our program concentrates on developing and enriching oral proficiency and comprehension and teaches students that a second language strengthens overall communication and interpersonal skills. Textbooks, multimedia, guest speakers and field trips are used to enrich the curriculum.
