Art
The intent of the
art program at Cardinal Shehan School is to provide students in
Kindergarten through Grade Eight with an environment where they
are encouraged to think creatively and express themselves
through various art mediums. Structured and sequential learning
situations in the visual arts are an essential part of the
social, emotional, and intellectual growth of every child at CSS. First and Second Quarter: All classes will study the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Each class will begin with creating a personal portfolio that emphasizes a particular Element of Art and Principle of Design. Pre-K and Kindergarten: Students will focus on the Elements of Art to communicate ideas in their artwork. 1st-5th Grade: Students will focus on Line, an Element of Art. Students will be able to identify qualities of line, create line designs, and evaluate their own artwork. 6th Grade: Students will focus on the Elements of Art and work with a variety of ways of depicting likeness from observation. A variety of media will be used to communicate ideas based on the selected criteria. 7th Grade: Students will focus on the Principles of Design to gain an understanding of how artists work from memory, experience, and observation. Students will use this information to create works of art that emphasize point of view, action, and sequence. 8th Grade: Students will focus on the application of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students will study Artistic Behaviors to achieve expression in their artwork.
