Peacemaking is a vital component of the Cardinal Shehan School mission statement. Every student receives instruction in conflict resolution, creating a peaceful environment, peace in action and each year we involve students in bullying prevention. Each Tuesday, the entire school empowers its students with lessons that encourage children to talk about conflicts and talk through how to solve them peacefully. Religion is taught daily, and Catholic identity is infused into every subject area. Technology is used across the curriculum in instruction. Teachers are able to incorporate technology into instruction utilizing Interwrite Boards, mobile laptop carts, LCD projectors, the student response systems, electronic microscopes, a computer lab, computer software programs, digital cameras, and other technological innovations. We are working to become a green school.
In 2008, we started our First
Majestic
Vegetable
Garden,
and in 2009, we have added two compost bins, a water garden,
raised beds, a salad table, and six water barrels.
Teachers use the garden as a living classroom to teach
about plant growth and cells, photosynthesis, the ecosystem,
what living things need to survive, economics and the market
place, and much beyond.
