In Math, Second Grade students explain their thinking as the concept is being
taught in order to facilitate a deeper understanding of the concept.
The Houghton-Mifflin Reading Program used in Second Grade is research-based. All
aspects of reading are taught including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
and comprehension. Our reading anthology includes fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, and many
other genres of literature. Our program provides supplemental books at varying levels to
allow for independent reading and group work.
In Science, various activities help students develop skills they need to think
like scientists. Reading and writing are integrated into each lesson. In Social Studies,
in order to make sense of the world, it is organized into categories: history, economics,
geography, government, culture, science, technology, and society. A colorful atlas complements
the Social Studies textbook.
